Kirklees Youth Council Meeting

11th November 2016

Our Student Leaders who are also representatives on the Kirklees Youth Council joined students from Shelley College, Whitcliffe Mount School and All Saints Catholic College at Huddersfield Town Hall for a day organised by Michelle Ross from Kirklees Youth Services.  The focus was Democracy; which was an interesting topic given it was Armistice Day and the same week as the American Presidential elections – some interesting and very mature discussions ensued on the outcome of this!

During the morning there was a talk by a representative from Parliament about the workings of the Palace of Westminster and all aspects of Government.  In the afternoon the group were given the rare privilege of sitting in the Kirklees Council Chamber where they each gave a presentation to Kirklees Councillors and local Members of Parliament on the projects they had been working on.  Manor Croft Academy were particularly pleased to be joined by Paula Sherriff the MP for Dewsbury and Mirfield who had taken time out of her busy schedule to join them for the afternoon.  Paula had previously visited the students at the Academy to investigate how they can assist her in developing Youth Voice in Dewsbury and Mirfield.
