Mr Wallis - Roller HockeyWorld Championships

9th December 2014

In November 2014, Manor Croft Academy PE Teacher, Tom Wallis made the 6,000mile trip to Canelones in Uruguay to represent England at the Roller Hockey World Group ‘B’ Championships. He was selected in a squad of 10 players from all over the UK to compete in the competition held every 2years, with a main goal of gaining promotion to the World Group ‘A’ Championships in France in June 2015. Teams from USA, Uruguay, Holland, Egypt, Macao and Austria all competed in an attempt to finish in the top 3 and gain promotion into the top flight. England played the best hockey by far throughout the tournament, and recorded impressive victories over USA (5-1) and Holland (5-1 – Wallis scoring on his international debut) in the group stages to qualify in first place and earn a quarter final meeting with Egypt. England cruised through the quarter final with an 8-1 victory and Wallis scored his second of the tournament. Holland were waiting in the semi-final, however it was business as usual as England ran out 5-1 victors and confirmed their promotion to the World Group ‘A’. England then played Austria in the gold medal game, and after some fantastic hockey from both teams it was Austria who were eventually victorious, scoring a penalty to win the game with 14seconds remaining.

On his experience Mr Wallis told us “It has been a great tournament and a fantastic experience. I am very lucky to have been given this opportunity and I hope that I can continue to represent my country in France in June”.
